Mike offers some suggestions regarding these risks. Click here to listen.

March 14, 2011 - Mike Staton, MSU Extension Specialist shares the benefits of early planted soybeans. YIELD: based on planting date of soybeans. Weather in late April/early May has been much more conducive to a final yield number which is larger than soybeans planted in mid to late May, or even later. Click here to listen.

February 28, 2011 - Mike Staton, MSU Extension Specialist takes a look at the management practices of the top five and bottom five yielding producers from each of the past five years of the Michigan Soybean Yield Contest who produced soybeans without irrigation. He found that there’s nearly two weeks difference in the planting dates which also results in over 25 bu/acre difference in yield. Listen to this SoyPOD for all the details. Click here to listen.

February 21, 2011 - Mike Staton, MSU Extension Specialist continues to share the results of Michigan’s 2010 Soybean Yield Contest after analyzing the data from the 48 producers who entered.  Staton split the group in half based on their yields. The median yield was 64 bu/ac, the high yielding group averaged approximately 72 bu/ac, and the low yielding group 55 bu/ac.  He then compared these two groups based on their planting dates and the type of planting equipment used.
